What does the handwriting mean?
About how handwriting is formed and why it is so terrible, we talked with a professor, academician of the Russian Academy of Education, Doctor of Biological Sciences, director of the Institute of Age Physiology of the Russian Academy of Education Maryana Bezrukikh.
First you need to understand: why do we teach children to write? So that they can draw sticks and circles? Of course not. Calligraphy alone does not make any sense. We want the child to be able to correctly and clearly express his thoughts in writing. But so that a person can not only write, but also read what he wrote in order to find his mistakes and correct them, the handwriting should be legible.
And for this it is necessary that:
- the letters were the same height and width;
- straight lines were straight;
- parallel lines remained parallel;
- the ovals were of regular shape.
What does handwriting depend on
Handwriting for the most part does not depend on the wishes of the child. Rather, it is the result of errors in learning:
1. Too early onset
There is a rule - the sooner we start teaching a child to write, the worse his writing will be in the future. And if the five-year-old adults give a pen, he is not able to take it correctly, but will clamp it in a fist. In this position, italic (uninterrupted) writing is impossible. In addition, children in the age of six, or even earlier, are brought into the first grade today. And few know that every six months they are extremely important - all the functions that are necessary for writing mature. This, incidentally, partly explains the fact that before children wrote better - they began to study at seven or eight years old.
2. Learning in continuous (italic) writing
The main problems with children's handwriting in our school are connected with the fact that they are still often required to write without interruption, combining all the letters with each other. Such a letter does not correspond to the capabilities of the child, the features of his development. Moreover, teaching continuous writing inhibits the formation of the writing skill, that is, the child as a result learns much more slowly.
The fact is that continuity requires encircling along the already written line, but this is not available for a child of 6-10 years old. But in our country, children come to the 1st grade, of which approximately the third part does not have fine motor skills. This is not their fault, but as a rule, a consequence of disorders during pregnancy and childbirth, hyper- or hypotonic muscles.
3. The intensity of the school curriculum
Modern children are in a hurry endlessly, because this is how the program works. In lessons, the pace of work is often so high that the child does not have time to think about what he wrote, double-check the text. From here - and low literacy, and illegibility, and a huge stress in which children are and which, in turn, affects the handwriting.
We analyze examples: how to identify problems by handwriting
Handwriting examples and comments on them
Katya, 11 years old
Here you can see endless encircles along the lines already written - most likely the girl was taught continuous writing. Or she corrects herself all the time, begins to write one, and immediately catches herself and writes another. This indicates that the writing skills are not formed, because at this age the child should no longer think how to write, but should think about what kind of thought he poses. In addition, there are many errors showing the difficulties of sound-alphanumeric analysis: it is difficult to translate sounds into letters.
It can be assumed that this child has reduced working capacity and increased fatigue, and therefore the first lines are written well, but then working capacity drops sharply - the number of errors increases and the handwriting worsens externally.
Alyosha, 10 years old
The handwriting is quite clear, stable, no corrections and encircles. The motor side of the letter is formed; he does not think about which letter to write and does not correct it. But with literacy it’s worse: in the word “hiding” the child writes “quiet”, “fed” instead of “looped”.
He also does not know how to translate sounds into letters. It is difficult for him to emit a real sound, he does not hear it, so the vowels begin to miss
Such handwriting is quite common. Many try to write finely, finely, because the smaller the letter, the shorter the line of writing and the faster they write. Why is this bad? The fact that words due to blindness and small size are unreadable. The child reads himself with difficulty, and it is very difficult for him to check what he wrote. Because of this, there may be any errors.
Nikita, 11 years old
By handwriting it is clear that the child is terribly tense. Even overstressed and is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. From this he has a very strong tremor, his hand trembles.
This becomes apparent if you carefully look at the lines of writing: the hand stops, and you get extra points. In general, there is not a single straight line. This tension may be due to the control situation itself, dictation, or the child himself is very anxious.
It can be assumed that he has problems with sleep, some other nervous disorders. And it would be good for parents to bring their child for a consultation with specialists. Maybe he is afraid of teachers, parents, poor grades, or he has the wrong regime, difficulties in relationships in the family
Dima, 12 years old
There are almost all violations: both the lack of form of the handwriting, and a sharp decrease in performance. The first line is written even more or less clearly, and with each next line it becomes increasingly difficult to understand. There are a lot of corrections, and they say, most likely, about the hyperactivity of the child and about impaired attention and reduced performance.
Please note: each word he begins with complex squiggles - at that moment he still thinks, because he does not yet understand what he is writing.
